contour des femmes

This collection of sculptural wall décor was inspired by an offcut from another one of her sculptural series- Silhouette. A leftover piece that loosely resembled the side profile bust of a woman eventually evolved into the full Contour des Femmes wall hanging collection, which was developed throughout the pandemic during a time of forced self-reflection.

While working on the shape and scale of the piece- slowly carving and shaping the subtle curves of a body out of the offcut- questions about the value, definition and expectations of the “female” form (even as an abstract silhouette) were companions to her artistic process.

While the interpretive forms of the carvings suggest poised feminine shapes, the addition of natural fiber elements- which differ from piece to piece- creates a  delicate visual harmony, balancing the bold, shapely carving with the soft, textured fiber elements.

Each piece is hand carved from a starting template and then refined individually, depending on the natural qualities found in each piece of wood. Fibre’s are chosen to complement the existing details in the wood carvings, while neutral finishes are used to either tie the elements together- or contrast them- for bold results that can stand alone, or complement your existing wall décor pieces.
